Frequently Asked Questions
What is a FIRE number?
Your FIRE number is the corpus you need so that your investments cover your expenses for life. The common rule is 25 times your annual spending, which lines up with a 4% withdrawal rate. Spend less or earn more from your portfolio, and the number shifts.
How is the FIRE number calculated?
It is your annual expenses divided by your safe withdrawal rate. At a 4% rate, that is 25x your yearly spending. So if you spend 6 lakh a year, you need a corpus of 1.5 crore. Lower the withdrawal rate and the corpus you need goes up.
What is a safe withdrawal rate in India?
The classic 4% figure comes from US data. Many Indian planners prefer something more conservative, closer to 3% to 3.5%, because inflation here runs higher and our market history is shorter. Try a few rates in the slider and see how the timeline changes.
Can I really retire early on these numbers?
The math gives you a target and a rough timeline, not a promise. Real life brings job changes, health costs and market swings. Treat this as a planning tool. Once you're close, build in a buffer and revisit your assumptions every year.
